No. 6 USC Men’s Tennis Tournament UNC Indoor First Round

THIS WEEK

The University of Southern California men’s tennis team’s quest for a fifth straight ITA National Team Indoor Championship begins Friday against the No. 10 seed. The Trojans are ranked seventh out of 16 teams and will face 10^th-seeded Tar Heels in the first round on Friday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time (12 p.m. Central Time) at XS Tennis Village in Chicago, Illinois.

The first-round win advanced the Trojans to a Saturday, Feb. 18 quarterfinal matchup with either No. 2 Kentucky or No. 15 Florida. The semi-finals will be played on Sunday (February 19), with the championship game taking place on Monday. (February 20).

INFORMATION IN ITA

Featuring the top 16 teams from the NCAA Division I level, the ITA Division I Men’s Indoor Championship has been a cornerstone of the collegiate tennis landscape since its inception in 1973.

Hosted by the University of Illinois, this year’s field includes 13 of the top 15 teams in the Feb. 8 ITA Collegiate Tennis Team Rankings.

Ohio State comes out on top, followed by Kentucky. Of all the participating teams, the SEC paces all conferences, with five representatives competing in this year’s tournament. Right behind the SEC are the ACC, Big 12 and Big Ten, each with three teams competing. USC and Stanford represent the Pac-12.

As a simple tournament, teams will play one game each day, with the championship game set for Monday, February 20th at 1:00 PM ET.

All teams are guaranteed to play at least three matches during the weekend either through the main or consolation draw.

SCOUTING UNC

Well. 12 University of North Carolina men’s tennis boasts three Tar Heels in ITA singles rankings in No. 19 Ryan Seggerman, No. 59 Brian Cernoch and No. 107 Chris Li. Three UNC duos are also ranked No. 19 Brian Cernoch and Ryan Seggerman, No. 39 Casey Kanie and Ryan Seggerman and No. 50 Benjamin Kittay and Ryan Seggerman.

HISTORY IN THE EAST

• USC has won five ITA National Team Indoor Championships, including titles in 1987, 1988, 2012 and 2020.
• The Trojans have reached the championship game seven times, including most recently in 2015.
