INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI women’s tennis team picked up a pair of home wins Friday (Feb. 17) defeating a pair of in-state foes in the University of Mary at Holy Cross at the West Indy Racquet Club. The Jaguars beat Marian 6-1 in the morning and followed with a 7-0 sweep of Holy Cross in the afternoon.
In the first match, the Jaguars took a tough double point and eventually rode it to a 6-1 victory. Meghan Bernard and Samantha Hayward team won 7-6 at No. 1 doubles and Marta Krakowski and Sarah Lounsbury won with number 3, 6-4.
The individual wins came much easier as four of IUPUI’s five wins came in straight sets. Bernard won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 and a freshman Emma Dell won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Fellow freshman Grace Lampmanwon at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-2 and Lounsbury collected a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles. Hayward earned his come-from-behind win at No. 2 singles, winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The Jaguars beat Holy Cross in the afternoon, starting with doubles by Bernard and Hayward in the 1st. Marta Krakowski and at Lounsbury No. 3 to take the starting point.
The head coach Pawel Gajdzik‘steam put forth a strong effort in singles to win, winning five of six matches in a row.
Hayward won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 and Dell won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Lampma cruised 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 and Lounsbury won his match at No. 5. , 6-0, 6-2 . Krakowski won at number 6, 6-0, 6-4.
Bernard had the toughest competition of the day but won 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).
The Jaguars wrap up a busy weekend when they host Western Kentucky at West Indy Racquet Club at 9 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 19).
