Karen Liu won the 200 fly title; The Lions set three more records on the final day of the Ivy League Championships

PRINCETON, NJ — Columbia’s women’s swimming and diving team finished fifth with 910.5 points at the 2023 Ivy League Championships, capping off an incredible four-day performance by the Lions. This year’s event, held on the campus of Princeton University, saw Columbia win one gold medal, three bronze medals, six new program records and 17 top-eight finishes.

Princeton won the competition with a score of 1480. Harvard finished second with 1254 points. Yale finished third with 1158.5 points. Brown just edged out the Lions for fourth place with a score of 951.5

On the final day of competition, Columbia competed in the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 fly, 400 freestyle relay and the 3m diving final.

Karen Liu was today’s story, starting in the morning with a program record in the preliminaries of the 200 fly (1:57.59). He reached the final as the top finisher and won the gold medal, finishing first with a time of 1:55.99. This also broke the Columbia record he set earlier in the morning.

Aziza Ganihanova also had another big day, breaking the program record in the 200 back with an impressive time of 1:56.20. This was good for fourth place in the race.

The Lions finished the weekend in style with a new record in the 400 free. A team consisting of Emily MacDonald, Georgia Young, Sally Maand Isabelle Arevaloat 3:30.28, good for fifth place.

Day three’s top eight included fourth place in the 1650-free by Olivia Jubin (16:24.77), fourth place in the 100-free from Emily MacDonaldfinished sixth in the 200 breaststroke Ashley Hu (2:14.86), and sixth in the 200 fly Allison Martin (1:59.76).

“This meeting was forever,” the head coach Diana Caskey said. “This was a great way to end the 2023 Ivy Championship. We accomplished so much in those four days. I’m so proud of this team!”

NEXT

The Lions’ season isn’t over yet as they head to Annapolis, Maryland next weekend for the ECAC Championships. Columbia finished first at this year’s ECAC Winter Championships and will look to repeat that performance. The event is scheduled to start on Friday 24.2.
