Marylebone Cricket Club backs Stephen Fry over allegations he told racist and misogynistic jokes at event
- Some diners and the club say the married joke was misheard
- Fry, who is the club’s president, has refused to apologize for his behaviour
Stephen Fry has been accused of making racist and misogynist jokes during a cricket dinner he hosted at the MCC.
The complaint was made by Chris Waterman, a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club, who claimed Fry said: “I was going to say, ‘Good evening, ladies and gentlemen’, but there aren’t any female members there. I suppose they don’t have a drink.’
Mr Waterman said the TV presenter also referred to the Allahakbarries, the cricket team founded by author JM Barrie, and joked: ‘The term ‘Allahu Akbar’ used today is usually followed by a loud bang.’
However, other diners and the club in northwest London say the misogyny was misheard and the racist joke was never made.

MCC chief executive Guy Lavender said Waterman’s account was “factually incorrect”.
Fry, who is the club’s president, has refused to apologise.
Mr Waterman has called for disciplinary action against him.
