Ongoing India-Ireland Women’s T20 World Cup At the St. George Stadium in Gqerba, Irish wicketkeeper Mary Waldron caught the attention of cricket fans with her unique helmet. After India won the toss and elected to bat first, many fans took to social media in awe of Waldron’s helmet.

The head protection Waldron wears is similar to a rugby helmet. Unlike standard helmets, Waldron’s pack does not have direct protection over his head, but does have additional louvers near his eyes to ensure safety from serious injury.

Waldron is one of the oldest players in the tournament at 38 years old. In 2010, Waldron made his ODI and T20I debut for Ireland. Since then, he has appeared for them in 53 ODIs and 67 T20Is. Waldron is the most capped player in Irish history.

Speaking of the helmet, this isn’t the first time he’s worn one. Waldron had caught the world’s attention by wearing the same helmet in the T20I series against Pakistan last year in November.

In today’s match, India won the toss and elected to bat first. Smriti Mandhana’s superb knock of 87 helped the Women in Blue board for 143. Apart from Mandhana’s brilliance, the rest of the batsmen struggled to get going on a slow and sluggish pitch.

This is a must win for India as they lost to England in the previous game. The win sealed India’s place in the semi-finals. However, the loss puts India in serious danger of relegation. The Harmanpreet-led outfit had won their first two matches against Pakistan and West Indies.

India are likely to finish second in the group and face two-time defending champions Australia in the semi-finals. Led by Meg Lanning, the team defeated India in the finals of both the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup and the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
