Fry’s success continues as a template from his freshman year as the leading singles player with 18 total wins in 2021-22. In singles alongside graduate Salma Ziouti, she was unable to beat Jayhawks Heike Janse Van Vuuren and Malkia Ngounoue in a 6-4 loss.

Ziouti also fell short in singles after Maria Titova beat her in singles 6-2, 6-4. After the night’s result, Ngounoue secured Kansas’ lead with a 7-5, 6-1 win over sophomore Midori Castillo-Meza.

Vuuren won the match for Kansas after finishing the singles match against freshman Tanvi Narendran 6-4, 6-4.

Saturday: Arizona vs. Texas Tech

The Arizona women’s tennis team met Texas Tech University in a match in Lawrence, Kansas on Saturday, February 18, and the Lady Raiders did not score a point to collect a 4-0 victory over the Wildcats.

In the 8 o’clock challenge, the singles duo Fry and Ziouti beat TTU’s Avelina Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac 6-1. The duo also went 6-4 in the previous day’s game against the University of Kansas. Fry also won in singles 6-0, 6-2 against Arina Oreshchenkova.

In other singles matches, senior Kayla Wilkins defeated rival Cristina Tigle (7-6, 6-1) and Narendra’s Kate Dmitrichenko (7-5, 6-4).

Carter couldn’t muster a point for Arizona and had a one-game lead (1-0) before his match was called at three singles after losing 6-7 and winning the first two sets against 6-3 opponents.

Doubles was a long-term desperation. In addition to Carter and Castillo-Meza’s 5-1 loss to Olivia Peet and Tiglea, Wilkins and sophomore Belen Nevenhoven swept Dmitrichenko and Camryn Stepp 6-0, clinching the doubles for Texas Tech.

Saturday: Arizona vs. Santa Barbra

After two losses over the past weekend against TTU and KU, Arizona managed to redeem itself with a 4-1 victory over the University of California, Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon.

Although Carter and Ziouti and their partners allowed the Gauchos to grab a point in doubles, they were able to get revenge in singles.

Carter beat UCSB’s Valentina Khrebtova (6-3, 6-4) and Ziouti defeated Kira Reuter (6-3, 7-5) to take home the only win for women’s tennis that weekend.

Arizona will next play in Montgomery, Alabama on February 24th and 25th in the Blue Gray Classic.
