VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (February 21, 2023) The Howard University men’s track and field team finished second overall at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va.
HU scored 109 points to finish behind the MEAC Champions Norfolk State Spartans.
Four bisons competed in the 60-meter hurdles final, led by a senior Germanie Byrd (Miami Gardens, Fla.) and a junior Zachary Hawkins (Lithonia, Ga.) in second (7.84) and third (7.93). Seniors Darian Clyburn (Louisville) and Kameron Davis (Miami) also competed and earned fifth (7.99) and eighth (8.27).
Byrd also entered the 200-meter dash with the newcomer Dylan Gaines (Houston), where they finished fourth (21.48) and eighth (21.90).
Gaines competed in the 400m with a time of 48.42, which led to a second place finish.
Seniors Ja’Leak Perry (Atlanta) and Goba Dan-Princewill (Houston) reached the finals of the 60-meter dash, where they earned sixth (6.83) and eighth (6.95).
Senior Ayoade Adebiyi (Virginia Beach, Va.) and a sophomore Julian Lawson (Sewell, NJ) participated in the mile run and 3K run. In the mile they finished sixth (4:20.72) and eighth (4:40.49), while in the 3K the Bison pair earned fourth (8:52.23) and eighth (9:36.57).
Other notable track performances included sophomore Bison Kalev Berry (Duncanville, Texas) took fourth in the 800m (1:56.42).
On the field as a sophomore Chase Drewery (Waldorf, Md.) earned bronze after landing 15.05 meters.
Norfolk State’s Gidion Sigei and Regan Kimtai won MEAC Co-Outstanding Runners and head coach Kenneth Giles earned Outstanding Coach. North Carolina Central’s Jaelyn Blanc took home the meet’s Outstanding Field Athlete.
4.-5. In March, several Bisons will travel to Boston for the IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships.
