During the past decade BCCI has played musical chairs with successive head coaches women’s cricket team. Since 2014, former skipper Purnima Rau was brought, three others Tushar ArotheWV Rama’s and Ramesh Pawar have also coached the side.
Most of the time, coaches are out of the preparation for ICC events. Less than two months before the ongoing Women’s T20 World CupPowar was moved out and Hrishikesh Kanitkarappointed batting coach, he was eventually made head coach in South Africa.
TOI takes a look at the coaches who were at the helm and then suddenly left…
PURNIMA HUNDRED: After the first round of the 2014 T20 World Cup for India, Rau was replaced by Sudha Shah but was recalled after two series. Between 2015 and 2017, India was successful with their first series win over Australia, Asian Cup championship win and qualification for the World Cup. But barely two months before the 2017 World Cup, Rau was sacked and Tushar Arothe was brought in.
TUSHAR AROTHE: An experienced coach and former Baroda player, Arothe first joined the team in 2013 and his tenure lasted for a year. He returned to guide the team to the 2017 Under-50 World Cup final, but was again given the short end of the stick and retired the following year.
WV RAMAN: A skilled reader of the game, Raman’s appointment in 2018 brought a lot of changes to the team. Under the former India batter, the team reached the final of the 2020 T20 World Cup. Instead of retaining him, BCCI replaced Raman with Ramesh Powar.
RAMESH POWAR: In 2018, his tenure was burdened by differences with the then skipper Mithali Raj As a result, BCCI did not renew his contract. In 2021, with the team, he guided them in the 2022 ODI World Cup, Asia Cup and Commonwealth Games. He suddenly moved there National Cricket Academy last December.
