The Huskies earn second place in the Big East Championship

East Meadow, NY The University of Connecticut swimming and diving team made a competitive run at the Big East championships, falling short of repeat champion Villanova. The win marks 10 straight for the Wildcats, a team that held a modest lead through all four days of competition. The Huskies earned the runner-up finish after a couple of close encounters with Georgetown, falling just 21 points to the Hoyas after the second day of competition.

Several strong performances helped propel the Huskies forward on Saturday. Julia Pioso took gold on his 1m dives and got the Huskies off to a great start. Niamh Hofland set the tone for the swimmers and started day 2^n.dplace in the 1,650-yard freestyle. This was soon followed by another 2^n.dplace, this time from home Robyn Edwards In the 200-yard backstroke. The Huskies would continue in a positive position throughout Kayla Mendonca, Maggie Donlevy, Angela Gambardella, Kiera Liesingerand Lexi Martino earns 3rd^rd4^th3^rd5^thand 5^threspectively.

In addition to the competition rankings, the team also collected a few personal recognitions. First-year Husky Head diving coach David McKown was honored as the Big East Women’s Diving Coach of the Year. Julia Pioso was recognized as the top women’s diver in the Big East.
