No. 43 Women’s Tennis Defeats JMU and Duquesne in Doubleheader

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women’s tennis team (8-5) posted a 4-1 win over James Madison (4-4) and a 6-1 win over Duquesne (4-3).

JMU

DOUBLE

James Madison women’s tennis struck first and took the doubles point. Carly Friedland and Olivia Dorner fell 6-3 in their match against Daria Afanasjeva and Alexandra Prudente at No. 3.

at address no. 2, Ioana Gheorghita and Alexandra Nielsen competed against Daria Munteanu/Daniela Voloh. The pair lost their match 6-3 to give JMU the doubles match point.

Well. 1 double, Sofia Chekhlystova and Carla Girbau were leading Ines Oliveria and Kylie Moulin 5-4 before the match was suspended.

Singles

The Nittany Lions won four singles matches and beat James Madison. No. 42 Sofia Chekhlystova started the blue and white singles win at No. 1. She defeated Kylie Mouin 6-0, 6-4.

Ioana Gheorghita added another singles point for Penn State. In place 3, Gheorghita beat Ines Oliveira 6-4, 6-2.

at No. 4, Olivia Dorner won a tough match against Daniela Voloh 6-3, 7-6 (9-7). Yvonne Zuffova won the Nittany Lions match with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Daria Afanasjeva.

Alexandra Nielsen was leading Hope Moulin 6-3 in the second period when the match was suspended. Karly Friedland was tied 1-1 in the second set after falling 6-3 in the opening frame.

DOUBLE

Penn State won all three courts and took the first point of the match. The Nittany Lions did not allow the Dukes to take a lead in any of the three games.

Ioana Gheorghita and Alexandra Nielsen realized the first double win for Sinivalkoinen at the 2nd place, 6-1, against Jasa Roka and Anastasiia Kotsyuba.

at address no. 3, Olivia Dorner and Alina Lebedeva defeated Ana Utrilla Benito and Ellen Shanahan 6-2 to claim the doubles point.

Sofia Chekhlystova and Carla Girbau won her match against Margot Pessy and Daniela Laton 6-4 and completed the sweep in doubles.

Singles

Ioana Gheorghita started the singles wins for Penn State at No. 2. She beat Daniela Laton 6-3, 6-2. Olivia Dorner declared victory at No. 3 against Margot Pessy, 6-3, 6-1.

Yvonne Zuffova won his second match of the day against Natasha Novak 6-3, 6-2. at No. 4, Alexandra Nielsen beat Ellen Shanahan handily 6-2, 6-1.

Alina Lebedeva capped Penn State’s day of wins by adding the team’s sixth point of the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Anastasiia Kotsyuba.
