Boston College men’s hockey swept by Maine

The Boston College men’s hockey team kept things closer tonight with Mitch Benson playing a solid game in net, but the Eagles continued to struggle to score even goals against Maine, falling to the Black Bears 2-1.

Benson had a strong first period, but BC used much of it on the penalty kill, making things difficult for him, allowing Maine to score a power play goal at 4:10 to take a 1-0 lead in the first. Maine took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, while BC scored just six goals in the first 20 minutes.

The Eagles picked up the pace offensively in the second, but couldn’t even things up until Maine took a 2-0 lead with 8:20 to go in the period. The Eagles continued their scoring power play just under 7 minutes into the second period when Cutter Gauthier scored to cut the Maine lead to 2-1. The Eagles ended the period with 20 more shots on goal than in the first, but still lost 2-1.

Neither team could get past the goalie as the third period progressed and BC pulled Benson with just over 2 minutes left in the game, and although the Eagles prevented Maine from scoring an empty net goal, they were unable to tie the game and the game ended in a 2-1 Black Bears win.
