Men’s Tennis Defeated 35. North Carolina State

RALEIGH, NC – Daniel Martin and Nicholas Campbell posted impressive singles wins, but it wasn’t enough to get the Elon University men’s tennis team past No. 35 North Carolina State as Phoenix fell 5-2.

SUMMARY

• Phoenix debuted three new doubles tandems on Sunday, but lost a tight doubles point.
• After the Wolfpack won third place, their team of Robin Catry and Luca Staehel used a late serve break to tie the game at 4-4 Oskar Antinheimo and Veljko Krstic 6-4 on Court 2, wins doubles point for NC State. Nicholas Campbell and Daniel Martin were tied 4-4 on Court 1 against Rafa Izquierdo Luque and Joseph Wayandi, who are No. 39 in the ITA doubles rankings.
• NC State won the first four singles matches played in a row 5-0.
• Daniel Martin won the opening set 6-4 against No. 75 Rafa Izquierdo Luque on Court 1, but lost the second by the same point to send the match to a tiebreak. With the scores tied at 9-9, the junior earned the final two points to seal the victory. The win was Martin’s first of two attempts against a player ranked in the ITA singles rankings since joining Phoenix. He now has a team-high seven single-game wins this season.
• Nicholas Campbell also won the match in an 11-9 tiebreak as the senior overcame an early deficit to give Elon wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Campbell has now won six of his last eight singles matches, with four of those wins coming at No. 2.
• With Martin and Campbell’s wins, Elon has won Nos. 1 and 2 singles in six of the last eight contests.
• This is the first time in the last four meetings between Elon and NC State that Phoenix has won by more than one point.

Elon will host a pair of matches next weekend at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Phoenix will face Hampton on March 4 at 2:00 p.m., before Wofford on March 5 at 1:30 p.m.
