Water polo goes 1-3; Defeats Siena at Princeton Invite

PRINCETON, NJ- The Bucknell Bison women’s water polo team (5-14) went 1-3 this weekend at the Princeton Invite. The Bison fell to Iona 9-8 on Friday night, beat Siena 7-3 on Saturday and dropped two Sunday games to LIU 18-5 and 13-7 to Villanova.

Iona 9, Bucknell 8

Last weekend Iona was caught by a bison biting her nails. This weekend, Iona returned a questionable favor. The match was 2-2 after one period. Motor boats and Isabelle Monaghan scored goals in Orange & Blue.

Chloe Smith scored in the second quarter, but the Gaels totaled two goals to take a 4-3 halftime lead.

The third period belonged to Iona as the Gaels scored three goals to Bucknell’s one. Bella Schraa tied the game at 4-4 before Iona went on a 3-0 run to end the quarter at 7-4.

Bucknell started the fourth quarter with two goals by Smith and Gwen Kallmeyer. Iona responded at the same time with two goals of their own. The Bison fought for the lead and scored two more points thanks to Schraa and Smith. But Smith’s goal came with 11 seconds left, and Bucknell’s clock ran out.

Bucknell 7, Siena 3

Bucknell used sensational defense to hold the Saints in check and keep Siena undefeated against the Bison.

The first set was tight, as neither team could score more than one goal. Motor boats recorded Bucknell’s scoring record.

Orange & Blue added two goals to Siena’s one in the second period. Siena scored first, but Motau responded almost immediately. Bella Moyni scored three minutes later to give Bucknell a 3-2 halftime lead.

In the third period, Bison increased its lead with goals from Kallmeyer and Motau and beat Siena 2-1. The Saints scored to cut it to 5-3 before the period ended.

However, there would be no demonstration. Bucknell shut out Siena in the final stanza. Goals from Schraa and Monaghan secured the victory.

LIU 18, Bucknell 5

The Long Island University Sharks had been ranked most of the year, and despite falling out of the top 25, LIU showcased its talent in an 18-5 game.

Bucknell scored first on a Moynihan goal, but LIU quickly established its high-powered offense during a 4-0 run. Smith ended the streak with a goal, but the Sharks scored three more goals as the period ended.

In the second quarter, LIU led 11-2 before Schraa scored back. It was small consolation as LIU scored twice to take a 13-3 halftime lead.

LIU scored twice in the third quarter before Kallmeyer found the back of the net. His goal rallied, and LIU scored just once before time expired in the third period.

The final period was uneventful as LIU scored twice and Olivia Day scored for Bucknell. LIU scored the final goal and confirmed the match with a score of 18-5.

Villanova 13, Bucknell 7

The Bison struck first for a 2-0 lead. Monaghan scored both goals for the Bison. Unfortunately, the Wildcats scored twice to tie the game.

Bucknell regained the lead in the second quarter on a Moynihan field goal. Villanova answered again with two goals and took a 4-3 halftime lead.

The third set saw offensive fireworks as both teams tallied their highest scores. Villanova previously scored three goals Give the plant gave the answer. Villanova responded with a goal, and Matou scored one. The Wildcats scored twice, with Motau scoring late in the quarter.

The final period cooled off as Villanova scored three times, and the Bison couldn’t build a rally to settle for one Monaghan goal. Neither team scored after the final 3:37 to make it 13-7.

The Bison will participate in the Wolverine Invitational and play two CWPA games against Saint Francis University and Michigan and two nonconference contests against Marist and San Jose State.
