MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women’s tennis team (8-2) defeated Dayton (6-4) and Eastern Illinois (4-7) Sunday afternoon in a 6-1 home opener at the Northwest YMCA.
Against Dayton, Ball State earned a doubleheader by taking 2nd and 3rd over the Flyers. Jessica Brown and Emily Desai started things off with a win, 6-0 at the same time Amy Kaplan and Elena Malykhbeat the Flyers’ No. 3 doubles tandem for a 6-1 mark.
In singles, Ball State won all but one match. The Cardinals won straight sets against their respective opponents ranked No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. Malykh earned the deciding match point for BSU in a 6-0, 6-3 loss against No. 5 singles player Erica Wojcikiewicz of Dayton.
The Cardinals kept things rolling in an evening contest against Eastern Illinois. Ball State dominated singles play as Ella Hazelbaker pair, Kaplan defeated the Panthers’ Madeline Monroy and Brittany Steve 6-1 on court No. 2. Desai and Malykh earned a 6-4 win on the top court to claim the Cardinals’ first point of the match.
In singles, courts No. 4 and No. 6 quickly left as Allison Mulville and Hazelbaker gave up a total of six runs in four innings to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead over the Panthers.
With four courts remaining, Desai earned match point for Eastern Illinois with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jemma Booth at No. 3 singles.
The Ball State women’s tennis team will be at home on Friday, March 3 when they host Butler at the Northwest YMCA. First serving is at 1:30 PM ET.
