Tennessee football coaches, administrators commit NCAA violations

Four individuals who previously worked for the Tennessee football program have reached an agreement with the NCAA’s enforcement staff regarding recruiting and illegal benefits violations at the football program and the appropriate penalties for those violations. The Infringement Board has provisionally approved the contract. The school and others involved in the case have disputed either the alleged violations, the application of certain sanctions, or both, and that part of the case will be heard by the Violation Board at a hearing, after which the board will release its case. full resolution.

The alleged violations occurred over several school years and included cash payments to recruits and their families, prohibited recruiting contact during a period of COVID mortality and unauthorized recruiting incentives during unofficial visits.

The committee will not discuss the details of the case to protect the integrity of the ongoing process, as the committee’s final decision, which includes potential violations and penalties for the school and other individuals, is pending.

By segregating cases, the Title I Violation Board publicly acknowledges the violation case and allows individuals to immediately begin serving their sentence while awaiting the board’s final decision. This decision also includes any findings and penalties against the school and other individuals who have contested the violations and/or penalties. This is the third case where the committee has used several solution paths.

In this case, the agreed upon penalties include presentence orders ranging from three to five years in accordance with the agreed Tier I hardened classifications.

In August 2022, the division’s board approved a law aimed at modernizing and speeding up the infringement process. While violations have traditionally allowed for negotiated settlements when not all parties participated, the new rules clarify when bifurcated cases are appropriate.
