Women’s lacrosse 14th lost to Princeton for 15th

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Well. 14 Rutgers women’s lacrosse (3-2) lost to No. 15 Princeton (2-1), 18-12, on Wednesday night at SHI Stadium. Tied 8-8 at halftime, the Tigers outscored the Scarlet Knights 6-1 in the fourth quarter to earn a road win in Piscataway.

Senior Cassidy Spilis scored four goals and added a season-best eight ties. Graduate student Marin Hartshorn scored first hat trick of the season as a junior Kate Carolonza produced four points from the goal and three helpers.

Meghan Ball added two caused turnovers and seven draw controls as Ball and Spilis helped RU to a 19-14 advantage in the tiebreaker. But the Tigers used a 26-21 shot-goal advantage and forced Rutgers into 12 turnovers to earn the victory.

Rutgers scored first thanks to Carolonza flipping his first pass of the night to a classmate. Ashley Moynahan quickly took a 1-0 lead at 12:30 of the opening quarter. Princeton would respond with a 3-0 run before Carolonza found Hartshorn to make it 3-2. Both teams traded goals with Princeton leading 5-3 after the first 15 minutes of play.

Spilis’ first goal of the night would make it a one-goal game before Princeton would answer and take a 5-8 lead with just under six minutes left in the half. Rutgers responded with a 3-0 run to tie the game at halftime. Second year student Michelle Warren scored his first career goal and rookie Ava Kane added an unassisted before Ball put together one of his best games of the season. The two-time Defensive Player of the Week caused a turnover and fell to Carolonza, who went up court and found Hartshorn to tie the game at 8-8 with 22 seconds left in the period.

The Tigers didn’t go away and scored four goals from the locker room. Jami McDonald’s halftime layup gave Princeton a 12-8 lead before Rutgers went on a 3-0 run thanks to goals from Carolonza, Spilis and the sophomore. Enamel Clothier. Carolonza’s unassisted goal at the buzzer of the third quarter made it 12-11 in favor of the visitors.

Princeton went on a 6-1 run over the final 15 minutes to put the game out of reach as the Tigers won the first meeting between the schools since they last played in 2014.
