Threats to cancel LTA events due to Russia and Belarus ban

[ad_1]

One of Britain’s top players has threatened the ATP and WTA Tours to cancel their traditional pre-Wimbledon tournaments unless the bans on Russian and Belarusian players are overturned.

Players such as Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and Aryna Sabalenka were barred from playing at Wimbledon in 2022 after the Ukrainian invasion.

There has been no official announcement as to whether this ban will remain in place for 2023. While the ATP and WTA Tours do not have the power to cancel Wimbledon as a grand slam, they can cancel tour events such as the old Queen’s.

“It’s a sad situation if Queen’s wasn’t on,” Britain’s No. 2 Dan Evans told The Times.

“I’m not a fan of threats. ATP should not throw stones Living in glass houses.

“Queen’s is one of the best and most prestigious tournaments on the tour and has done a lot for the ATP Tour in its time.”

Wimbledon was stripped of ranking points in 2022, with Australian legend Todd Woodbridge saying it “ruined” the ranking system for 13 months.

“As a result of the decision they made, the rankings are inaccurate and do not reflect reality,” he told Wide World of Sports in 2022.

“They are practically worthless.”

The ATP and WTA Tours have said tournaments organized by the British Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) will be canceled if it continues to “discriminate on the basis of nationality”, a move which Evans says will not fix the problem.

“I’m a massive advocate for the ATP in general,” the world No.28 said. “They are doing great things, but we need to have sensible conversations.

“I don’t think threatening the LTA with delicensing these events is the way to solve it.”

“It affects all British people,” he added. – They don’t get places or playing opportunities with the wild card.

“I think common sense should prevail. The LTA’s hands are also somewhat tied. This topic goes a little wider than tennis associations and governing bodies.”
