Indian paddler Sutirtha Mukherjee pulled off an upset after defeating world number 18 Jia Nan Yuan in the women’s singles semifinal match at the ongoing WTT Star Contender in Goa.
The 147th-ranked Mukherjee pulled off an incredible victory in front of his home crowd after a 3-0 win against the much higher-ranked Jia. The victory was in straight sets when the score was 11-7, 11-8, 11-7.
However, this is not the first time that Sutirtha beat a player ranked higher than him. In the qualifying rounds of the tournament, he eased out compatriot Prapti Sen in the first round before meeting 92nd seed Li Yu-Jhun of Chinese Taipei.
Mukherjee also won comfortably against Li in straight sets (11-9, 11-8, 11-6). The Indian next faced Lee Eunhye of South Korea, ranked 110th, and beat her 3-1. In the round of 64 matches, the 27-year-old also defeated India’s Suhana Saini, a 17-year-old talent, 3-1.
Mukherjee will face world number 19 Fu Yu of Portugal in the quarterfinals.
