NC State welcomes the ACC Wrestling Championship on Sunday

RALEIGH, NC (theACC.com)– The 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship kicks off Sunday at Valvano Arena in Reynolds Coliseum on the campus of NC State. The all-day event begins with first-round matches at 11 a.m. and ends with the nationally televised championship matches at 7 p.m. (ACC Network).

The tournament features three teams currently ranked in the top 15 in the countries and 38 wrestlers nationally ranked by InterMat in their respective weight classes.

Third-ranked NC State is looking to become the first program to win five straight ACC wrestling titles since former conference member Maryland won 20 straight from 1954-73. The Wolfpack shared the ACC regular season dual title with Pitt and Virginia Tech this season as each team posted a 4-1 record in conference play.

There are a few tickets left for Sunday’s all-day championships, and all places are general admission. Tickets are $10 for adults (19 and older; ACC students get in free with school ID) and $7 for youth 18 and under. Virginia Tech enters the ACC Championship ranked No. 10 in the latest NWCA poll, with Pitt ranked No. 15.

Pitt leads the way with four No. 1s in their respective weight classes, including defending champion Cole Matthews at 141 pounds and Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds.

Four-time defending ACC team champions NC State and Virginia Tech each have two No. 1 seeds, while Duke and North Carolina each have one.

Other defending champions this year include NC States Ed Scott (157) and Trent Hidlay (184) and Virginia Techs Mekhi Lewis (174). Lewis won the 2019 NCAA title at 165 pounds and North Carolina’s Austin OConnor, ranked No. 1 at 157 in this year’s field, was the 2021 NCAA champion at 149.

First-round action begins at the event at 11 a.m. The semifinals will be held at 1 p.m., followed by the consolation semifinals at 3:30 p.m. and the consolation finals at 5 p.m. The championship matches will begin at 7 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony.

ACC Network and ACC Network Extra plan nearly 10 hours of live coverage from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ACC Network Extra will broadcast preliminary and consolation rounds from both Mat 1 and Mat 2, and at 7:00 p.m. the finals will be broadcast live linearly on ACC Network. .

The ACC has received 33 automatic qualifications for the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which will be held June 16-18. March at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

This is the eighth consecutive year the ACC has received at least 31 AQ spots. The 33 picks this year are one shy of the 34 average from 2013-14, when Pitt entered the competition as a member of the league.

ACC was awarded 2023 qualifications in the following weight classes: 125 (2), 133 (3), 141 (3), 149 (4), 157 (3), 165 (3), 174 (3), 184 (5). ), 197 (4) and 285 (3).
