Mosinee hockey falls in state semifinals

MIDDLETON, Wis. (WSAW) – A historic season came to an end for the Mosinee field hockey team, falling 3-0 to Oregon in the state semifinals on Thursday.

Oregon punts once every three periods. Jacob Cameron scored the first goal late in the first period for the Panthers on the power play. Oregon’s second goal came early in the second period, again on the power play. This time Andrew Jicha hit it for the Panthers. A third power play goal early in the third put Oregon in the driver’s seat for good as Logan Letherberry scored the Panthers’ third goal.

In all, Mosinee was required to take 18 penalties, totaling 55 minutes. Oregon had 15 penalties, totaling 41 minutes.

I think it was just a game,” Mosinee head coach Troy Michalski said. We don’t usually take that many penalties. I don’t know if they do either. Unfortunately, it took away a lot of the momentum of the game and a lot of the flow of the game. We have to adapt and we didn’t do a good job today.

I would say it was both emotion and discipline, and maybe a couple of calls shouldn’t have happened, senior Caden Schmirler said, but it is.

The game concludes the Mosinees’ season and their first trip to the state tournament since 2008.
