Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame VictoriousOn opening night of the Big Ten Hockey Tournament

The best-of-three quarterfinals continue on Saturday

The home teams went 3-0 on the first night of competition in the 2023 Big Ten Conference Hockey Tournament, which began Friday on campus grounds.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Junior defenseman Steven Holtz scored his first career goal to lift second-ranked Michigan in a 6-5 overtime win over seventh-ranked Wisconsin.

Mackie Samoskevich scored a 6-5 goal 23 seconds into regulation in a game that featured six lead changes. Smoskevich and Adam Fantilli scored twice as the 11 goals tied for a tournament high.

Michigan (21-11-3) aims for a series sweep, while Wisconsin (13-22-0) looks to continue its season Saturday at Yost Ice Arena beginning at 7:00 p.m.

COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State freshman Stephen Halliday had a goal and three assists to lead the Buckeyes to a 5-1 victory over Penn State at Value City Arena.

Third-ranked Ohio State (19-13-3) scored three goals in the half to break the game open. Sixth-ranked Penn State (20-14-1) missed just the fifth time in 35 games.

Penn State is trying to repeat the script of last year’s tournament, when the Nittany Lions came from a game down to defeat Ohio State in the quarterfinals.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. Goalie Ryan Bischel made 36 saves as fourth-ranked Notre Dame shut out fifth-ranked Michigan State, 1-0, at Compton Family Ice Arena.

Grant Silianoff provided the game winner for the Irish at the end of the second period (16-14-5).

Michigan State (16-17-2) will try to keep its season alive tomorrow at 4:30 PM ET on FS2.
