Eagles drop home game to Jacks

In a close match today (March 11), Eastern Washington women’s tennis fell to No. 63 Northern Arizona, 0-7, at Jim Thorpe Field House.

“We faced a tough team today. They came out and played aggressively and did a lot of things well,” head coach Dustin Hinson said. “I thought we had good effort and focus today. We looked for ways to turn things around when things went NAU’s way. In the end, it wasn’t enough to turn games around. I’m still impressed with the play of our senior captain, Renata Gabuzyan. He didn’t come out on top today in singles, but he was there at the end and lost in the deciding semifinal. We definitely have some things to learn and work on this week in practice. All we can do is continue to put in the time and effort during the week and mentally prepare for the next opportunity.”

NAU won the double point, winning 1st and 2nd place. Isabella Foshee and Jennifer Kida led 4-2 at No. 3 doubles, but the match was not completed.

Renata Gabuzyan made a strong effort in the singles position and won the first set 6-4. Against Jacks Ana Guadiana, Gabuzyan dropped the second set 5-7 and 9-11 in the semifinals.

Leandra Nizetic also competed well at #4 against Daryna Shoshyna. The freshman fell 4-6 in the first set, but battled back in the second set. Nizetic came up short, 6-7 in the second and 3-0 in the semifinal.
