Men’s tennis beat UTRGV for sixth straight victory

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of Hawaii men’s tennis team (6-3) extended its winning streak to six with a 6-1 victory over UTRGV (Texas Rio Grande Valley) on Saturday night at UC San. Diego’s Northview Tennis Courts. .

Hawaii’s 3rd pair in doubles Empty Vlkovsky and Karl Collins beat UTRGV’s Te Kani Williams and Christopher Lawrance 6-2 to start things off. Two No. 2 Kilian Maitre and Axel Labrunie took a 6-4 lead over Sam Whitehead and Karlo Krolo to grab the doubles point. In the last doubles match, UH’s number one team Andre Ilagan and Lucas Labrunie UTGRV’s Emilien Burnel and Borna Devald won a tight tie that ended 7-6 (3).

The ‘Bows continued to battle, winning five of six singles matches against the Vaqueros. Currently ranked No. 56 in the ITA rankings, UH’s No. 1 Ilagan outlasted Burnel in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. On the No. 3 court, Guillaume Tattevian knocked off Krolo 6-3, 6-3 and then Maitre, playing No. 6 singles against Agustin Salazar 6-2, 7-5 to clinch the match. With the match already in hand, No. 2 Axel LaBrunie was tied 1-1 with UTRGV’s Borna Devald, forcing a super tiebreaking that Labrunie came out on top to win 10-6. Hawaii No. 5, Lucas Labrunie capped their streak with a three-set victory over Williams 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

UH was originally scheduled to compete this weekend in the Golden State Invitational hosted by Sacramento State and UC Davis. But the expected inclement weather canceled the two-day tournament. Instead, the Rainbow Warriors headed south to play UTRGV today and Nevada on Monday, March 13 at 9:00 a.m. HT.
