Suffern sends Clarkstown to double overtime
What a show. What a memory.
Cole Tyrell found a puck from the other side of the crease nearly four minutes into the second overtime and buried the right-place, right-time opportunity to give Suffern a 2-1 victory over Section 1 rival Clarkstown in the NYSPHSAA Division 1 semifinals at LECOM. Harborcenter.
Charlie Windwer set up the winner, carried the puck the length of the ice, shot wide, collected another chance off the boards and put the puck in the goal.
It was arguably the most consequential game in Section 1 hockey history.
All four games between Rockland County schools this season were decided by 2-1 scores. The Mounties won both regular season meetings, then fell to Clarkstown in overtime in the sectional final. Suffern advanced with a rotating at-large bid and will try to become the second-most in state history to win a NYSPHSAA title.
Quality scoring chances were few and far between in two-plus periods before Cole broke the scoring deadlock with a third-period volley, but nine seconds later, Jason Rothstein set up Nick Romeo from long range for the equalizer.
Clarkstown had three good looks in overtime, but Mounties goalie Ty Levy came up with three highlight-reel glove saves to keep the season alive.
Suffern plays West Genesee on Sunday at 2 p.m., seeking its fourth state title in program history.

Pelham is right back in the game for the championship
This is a different Pelham team, different from the group that won the state championship last season, different from the group that got off to a bumpy start.
However, the Pelicans are in a familiar situation.
An impressive start in a NYSPHSAA semifinal game Saturday lifted Pelham to an 8-2 victory over Saranac at the LECOM Harborcenter in Buffalo.
“This feels amazing,” Pelicans senior Angus Deeney said. “We’re here for a reason. We’re a great group. We started out a little tired. We graduated key players. We had a few guys going to coaching school. Nobody believed. Then we came together and realized we had to do something this year because we had a lot of skill and talent.”
Pelham will face Skaneateles on Sunday at 11 a.m. looking to become the first back-to-back state champions since New Hartford repeated in 2010. The Lakers won 4-3 in overtime when they met above the state on Jan. 6.
“It was a different team,” Pelicans junior Griffin Evans said.
Will Crotty scored the game-winning goal 2:16 into the game to give Pelham the lead, but Landon Giroux scored the equalizer six minutes later. That’s when the Pelicans stepped up.
“They scored and my guys responded, which they’ve been doing all season,” first-year coach Michael Cambria said. “It’s kind of an underdog story. This team has had some things thrown at them, but they continue to respond.”
Luke Green set up Reid Finster, who put Pelham back on top 4:30 into the first period, then scored an insurance goal before the period ended.
Evans scored twice in the second period, while Daniel Mitriano and Chris Franchini each added a goal to put the game out of reach. James Vasalotti completed the scoring in the third period for the Pelicans. Cam White made 18 saves. Evans, Green and Crotty each shared three assists.
“We’ve been in battles like this all year and this group has responded really well,” Deeney said. “On the bench, we were just all excited. We were nervous in the first period, but when we got those two back, we went into the locker room with a lot of confidence.”
Despite the turnover, Pelham has experienced players who know the right approach for the championship game.
“We definitely have the advantage of having been here,” Evans said. “It’s nice to feel comfortable with everything that’s going on. We feel at home, so that helps.”
