MYRTLE BEACH, SC Duke track and field had another outstanding showing at the Shamrock Invitational on Friday, as Isabel Wakefield crushed the institution and set the record in the women’s long jump, while the Blue Devils posted a program-best five points and won seven events.
Duke remains atop the men’s and women’s standings at the conclusion of the second day’s events. The Blue Devil women have put a big gap between themselves and the runner-up team and have a whopping 122 points. On the men’s side, Duke has scored a total of 56 points.
TOP PERFORMANCES
- Wakefield started with a bang on Friday, demolishing the seven-year-old stadium and setting records in the women’s long jump. Wakefield produced his best in his fifth attempt as he soared to 6.29m (20-7.75ft) and conjured himself to the top of the field.
- In the women’s hammer throw, Duke had three of the Blue Devils finish in the top five and four in the top six. Zoe Waddell led the group in winning the event behind a throw of 57.83 meters (189-9 ft), while jumping two spots to No. 2 on the all-time list.
- Moorea Mitchell recorded the program’s third-farthest hammer throw on her fifth attempt and recorded a personal best throw of 57.10 m (187-4 ft).
- Jordyn Shubrick and Lily Lockhart finished fourth and sixth with throws of 54.64 m (179-3 ft) and 54.27 m (178-1 ft).
- Men’s spear saw Scott Campbell give the best performance and jump to second all-time in program history. Campbell set the tone after the jump with a throw of 72.16 m (236-9 ft) on her first attempt that no one else came close to.
- Joseph Didario cleared on her second attempt to finish fourth overall after her 60.79m (199-5ft).
- Duke’s women’s 4x200m relay consists of Jenna Crean, Maddie Dietz, Lauren Tolbert and Madison Mulder joined in on the fun and made his own check on the show’s record books. The quartet clocked in at 1:36.05, placing them fourth all-time in program history.
- Max Strong had a strong showing in the men’s long jump early in the afternoon, clearing 7.51 meters (24-7.75 feet) to be fourth all-time at Duke.
- Anoush Krafian was superb in the final three events of the women’s heptathlon en route to second. Krafian’s performance included three top finishes, including wins in the long jump, 5.38m (17-8 feet) and the 800m (2:28.91).
- Duke also displayed complete dominance in the women’s 100m and men’s 4x800m relays.
- In the 100 meters, the Blue Devils took the top three spots in the event, while five athletes finished in the top seven.
- Hall Bieber and Abby Geiser beat Bieber in a neck-and-neck race with a displacing Geiser to win, 11.34 seconds to 11.35 seconds. Megan McGinnis it took 11.51 seconds to finish third. Chyler Turner finished sixth (11.58) and Julia JacksonThe time 11.68 was good for seventh.
- Duke took the top three spots in the men’s 4x800m race, which he led Matyas Csiki-Fejer, Nick Dahl, Jeremy Cain and James Lee who won the event in 7:40.45.
- The Blue Devil team Connor Wells, Austin’s song, Carter Dillon and Rory Cavan at 7:43.22 on the way to second place, when Nelonen was composed Chris Theodore, Ryan Banko, Jared Kreis and Beck Wittstadt finished third with a time of 7:48.77.
