Blue Devils Sweep Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, SC Duke’s track and field season is off to a fast start as the Blue Devils finished the weekend at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational on Saturday, placing first in both the men’s and women’s Kent events.

The Blue Devil women flexed their muscles throughout the three-day meet, scoring a total of 247 points, 136.5 more than the runner-up (JMU). On the men’s side Tyler Hrbek and Robbie Otal helped lead Duke to a meet victory by setting records in the men’s pole vault and men’s discus.

TOP PERFORMANCES

• Tyler Hrbek and Robbie Otal achieved new state records in their respective events with personal best performances.
• Otal got the Blue Devils off to a great start in the first field event of the day, throwing the discus 58.83 meters (193 feet) on her first attempt to pick up the first win of the afternoon.
• After clearing the first 10 heights, Hrbek cleared the next three on his second attempt before settling on a final correction of 5.15m (16-10.75ft). In addition to setting a new facility record, his mark also moved to No. 5 on the Duke list.
• Beau Allen had a career-best performance in the season-opening meet on his way to second in the men’s high jump. Allen jumped a personal best of 2.17 m (7-1.50 ft), bettering his 3rd Duke mark.
• The women’s shot put saw a revision of the program’s record book behind the stars Lily Lockhart In his Duke debut. Lockhart’s third attempt was truly a charmer, as she posted a mark of 14.72 meters (48-3.50 feet), the third-longest throw in program history.
• Jonathan Horn and Kinsie Huggins registered third in their respective competitions.
• Also competing in the pole vault, Horn cleared 4.66 meters (15-3.50 feet) and Huggins’ throw cleared 13.15 meters (43-1.75 feet).
• Duke posted top two finishes in the women’s high jump and women’s 400-meter hurdles.
• Believe in Agina first rose from a distance of 1.67 meters (5-5.75 ft), Addie Renner following in second after jumping 1.64 meters (5-4.50 ft). on the track, Arianna Gragg and Haley Rizek went 1-2 in the hurdles in 1:00.41 and 1:01.04.
• The Blue Devil women dominated the final day of competition, and the team also won the women’s 4x400m, 4x100m, 200m and 400m.
