Zanon and Janecke were invited to the US Women’s National Team evaluation camp

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State women’s hockey forwards Tessa Janecke and Kiara Zanon was invited to the U.S. Women’s National Team evaluation camp, as announced Monday. Assistant head coach Allison Coomey will also become part of the staff as a camp coach. The camp will be held from the 27th to the 31st. March in Blaine, Minn., at the National Sports Center. The 2023 IIHF World Championship roster will be released on Saturday, April 1.

The camp is part of the process to select the U.S. Women’s National Team that will compete in the 2023 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship from May 5-16. April in Calgary, Alberta.

Janecke was an integral part of Penn State’s championship season, skating in 38 games and scoring 22 goals, 25 assists and 47 points. The Orangeville, Ill., native scored his first hat trick as a Nittany Lion on Feb. 25 against Lindenwood in the CHA semifinals, marking the second time in program history in a postseason hat trick. He also broke all freshman program records, including single-season points, assists and goals.

Janecke was named CHA Rookie of the Year, HCA National Rookie of the Year and was nominated for the Patty Kazmaier Award. Additional fixtures for the 2022-23 season include one CHA Forward of the Month award, one HCA National Rookie of the Month award, three CHA Rookie of the Month awards and six CHA Rookie of the Week awards.

Zanon’s third season as a Nittany Lion was historic in 2022-23. He broke downby Natalie Heisingrecord for goals in a single season, which was 21, as he currently has 25 this season. The Fairport, NY, native leads the nation by five short finishes. On January 13th against RIT, the forward tied and surpassed the 100 career point mark when he made back-to-back straight goals in the same penalty shootout. He hit the mark faster than anyone in Nittany Lion program history.

Zanon also broke his own single-season program record for points from the previous season, which was 41, after getting 49 this year. He was a three-time CHA Forward of the Week recipient and received two CHA Forward of the Month awards. The Fairport, NY native was also named the 2023 CHA Player of the Year and CHA Top Scorer. Zanon was also named a Patty Kazmaier Top Ten Finalist.

One of the best coaches in the country, Coomey’s leadership and perspective on the game has helped create a positive winning culture at Penn State during his six seasons with the Nittany Lions. Penn State won its second CHA regular season title and first CHA tournament title in 2022-23 with a 27-9-2 overall record.

She was named the 2019 AHCA Women’s Hockey Assistant Coach of the Year for an outstanding career resume that now includes five CHA playoff appearances with the Nittany Lions and her promotion to assistant coach prior to the 2020-21 season. Prior to Penn State, Coomey had a successful nine-year stint at Boston University where he coached four Olympians who won a total of six gold medals. He had also coached both Zanoni and Janecke with the USA Hockey Development team in a three-game series against Canada.

She also has previous coaching experience with USA Hockey as a member of USA Hockey’s scouting staff at the 2019 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship. She also has experience as a Team USA Camp instructor at the Women’s National Festival and the Women’s National Winter Camp. This is the second time Coomeyhas served as a camp coach at an evaluation camp. This is the first time that both Zanon and Janecke have been invited to the US Team Evaluation Camp.
