Selection Sunday for the 2023 NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament took place yesterday, and three Massachusetts schools are among the 16 teams in the field.

Boston University is no. 2 seed in the East Regional, Harvard is No. 2 and Merrimack is No. 4 in the Northeast Regional.

The table below shows the current national championship odds for all 16 teams still in contention. While BU and Harvard are both at the top, there is a clear gap between the top four teams and the rest of the pack.

The top four teams in the national polls – which are also the top four seeds in the series – are ranked above the other 12 teams in the national championship odds.

Minnesota, which received 28 of 34 first-place votes in the latest USA Today poll, tops the list at +250, closely followed by the nations fourth-ranked Michigan.

Oddly enough, Quinnipiac (which received six other first-place votes) is only fourth at +600. The relatively long odds for the Bobcats may be due to their tough draw in the Northeast Regional, which includes Harvard (6th), Ohio State (8th) and Merrimack (14th).

The Boston Terriers survive the epic Hockey East tournament

Even though BU was safely in the field as an at-large team no matter what happened in the Hockey East Tournament, it was still a memorable run for the Jay Pandolfos group. After dominating Vermont 7-3 in the quarterfinals, the Terriers needed a late powerplay goal to force OT against Providence in the semifinals. Dylan Peterson tied the game at 1-1 with just 2:32 left on the clock before Quinn Hutson sent BU to the final with a goal at 10:52 of the first period of overtime.

BU needed another comeback, OT win against Merrimack in the Hockey East final. This time, Quinns’ younger brother Lane was the hero, scoring the tournament-winning goal 1:57 into OT, his second of the game in a 3-2 win over the Warriors.

Colgate upset Harvard in the ECAC tournament

Harvard knocked off Princeton in the ECAC quarterfinals, but needed an epic 1-0 overtime win over Cornell in the semifinals to set up a date with Cinderella Colgate in the finals. Alex Laferriere scored the OT winner in the quarterfinals, his team-high 21st of the season.

Colgate, seeded fifth in the 12-team tournament, was just a day away from pulling off a massive upset of top-seeded Quinnipiac in the semifinals (2-1 OT). The Red Raiders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and hung on for a 3-2 victory despite Harvard outscoring the ECAC champions 36-23.

BU, Harvard favored in first round matchups

Boston, which plays in the 2023 NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament opener on Thursday, March 23 at 2 p.m. ET, is a slight -130 favorite against Western Michigan. Boston should have a clear home-ice advantage when the East Regional is held in Manchester. The Broncos were upset by Colorado College in the NCHC tournament opener and have not played a game since March 11th as a result.

Harvard will face Ohio State in their first-round matchup on Friday, March 24 at 2 p.m. ET. The opening odds have both teams at -115 in Bridgeport, Rhode Island.

Merrimack has a tight tie against Quinnipiac later Friday (5:30 p.m. ET) and is a +180 underdog to win.
