Football completes exercise #2

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.– The Central Michigan Football program wrapped up its second practice of the spring 2023 campaign during Monday’s morning session.

For the second straight day, Chippewa football players wore helmets and shoulder pads during a two-hour practice at the Indoor Athletic Center Turf Bay. Drills included 7-on-7 offense vs. defense, wide receivers vs. defensive backs and offensive line vs. defensive line and various positional drills. After special teams, the Chippes went 11-on-11 on offense against defense and ended the day with a two-minute drill.

The CMU coaching staff held site meetings at the Chippewa Champions Center both before and after practice. Monday’s practice is the second of 15 spring sessions. Chippe took a break on Tuesday before returning to practice on Wednesday.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN FOOTBALL SPRING CHANGES

• Central Michigan returns seven starters on offense. Starters include offensive lineman David Heinzen (12 career starts), Deiyantei Powell-Woods (28 career starts), and Brayden Swartout (13 career starts). Quarterbacks Jase Bauer and Bert Emanuel Jr. both started games in 2022 as tight ends Marcus Young (five starts) and Cade Conley (three starts) as well as wide receivers Look for Hogan (eight starts) and Jalen McGaughy (six starts). Running backs Marion Lukes and Myles Bailey both saw extensive activity last year.
• Chippe had returned an experienced defense with nine returning starters. These players include defensive linemen Robi Stuart (35 career starts), Jacques Bristol (31 career starts) and Michael Heldman (11 starts), both linebackers in Kyle Moretti (11 starts) and Justin Whiteside (14 starts) and the defending Backs Trey Jones (12 starts), Donte Kent (25 starts), Jayden Davis (eight starts) and De’Javion Stepney (10 starts).
• On defense, numerically speaking, Central Michigan returns players responsible for 86 percent (712/831) of its tackles, 64 percent (66.5/104) of its tackles, 54.5 percent (20/36.5) of its sacks, 100 percent of its tackles. its interceptions (4/4), 80 percent of its pass breakups (44/54), 68 percent (17/25) of its quarterback hurries, 83 percent of its forced fumbles (5/6) and 83 percent of its fumble recoveries.
