Baseball won the Ivy League opener over Brown

NEW YORK – Columbia baseball defeated Brown in its Ivy League opener Friday, 10-3, Friday from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

Andy Leon picked up his third win of the season after pitching five innings and allowing just one run on four hits and striking out three. Will Parkinson pitched the final four innings, allowing two runs on four hits to earn his first save of the season. Leon and Parkinson settled into contact and hit three brown shots in total.

“Andy has been very consistent,” head coach Brett Boretti said. “It was good that he worked a couple of walks in the last inning to get out. He’s been really good at throwing strikes.”

The Lions (8-9, 1-0) hit five extra-base hits Friday, including home runs from Weston Eberly and Cole Fellows. Griffin Palfrey was the only Lion to record a multi-hit game. Eberly drove in a team-leading three runs, while Palfrey, Fellows, Andy Blake, Hayden Schottand Jack Kyle everyone was jogging.

Brown (2-13, 0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the second when DJ Dillehay singled in Jare Johnson. Columbia took its first lead of the game in the third on a two-run home run by Eberly.

“Weston is really good at picking his pitches,” Boretti said. “That was a huge point in the game to get us the lead right back and get us going in the right direction.”

In the fourth, the Lions increased their lead by two runs and went 4-1. Kail ripped a triple down the right field line to score Anton Lazits and gives the first-year sophomore his 15th RBI of the season.

The Bears cut the lead in half to 4-2 on a Gunner Boree RBI groundout in the sixth. In the bottom half of the inning, Columbia scored four runs. Fellows hit his second home run of the season to make it 5-2. The Lions then scored three runs without recording a hit. Blake reached on a fielder’s choice to bring in Sky Selinsky, and then Columbia scratched in two runs by setting up a runner on first base with a runner on third base twice.

“Cole has done a good job with his opportunities,” Boretti said. “He’s learning, too. He’s getting his swing out and that was big, too. When they score, he’ll tie it and then we’ll score three more goals there.”

Brown scored a run to make it 8-3 in the eighth and was charged against Parkinson with two outs. Blake made a charge to get the runner on first and retire the side. The Lions scored two more in the eighth inning to seal the win and record their second straight 10-run game.

Columbia wrapped up a three-game sweep against Brown with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch for Game 2 of the series is set for 11:30 a.m. from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
