Men’s tennis sweep of Virginia Tech-BU doubleheader

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Well. 13 Harvard Men’s Tennis turned in dominant performances in its first two home matches of the 2023 spring season. The Crimson took on 75. place in a doubleheader between Virginia Tech and Boston University.

Another ranked enemy goes down

To open the day, the Crimson swept the 75th nationally ranked Virginia Tech Hokies 4-0 in their first match of the spring at the Beren Tennis Center.

Performing in front of the home crowd, Crimson started the day by securing a double point win in 2nd and 3rd place. Ronan Jachuck and Steven Sun pulled in 11^th Win of the year over Alberto Orson/Scott Sculley (Virginia Tech) 6-3. Dominates in the semi-finals, Henry von der Schulenburg and Alan Yim won her singles battle 7-6 (1) and won the doubles point for Harvard.

Moving on to singles, recently ranked #112 nationally Ronan Jachuck, defeated his No. 4 opponent in straight sets to put the Crimson up 2-0. No. 20 von der Schulenburg faced Jachcuk 6-4, 7-5 soon after, pulling Harvard to within one win of the match.

In place of No. 1, No. 30 Harris Walker returns to the match in three sets. After dropping the first set 2-6, Walker dominated the rest of the match, winning the second set 6-2 and not dropping a game in the final set.

Battle of Boston

In their second match of the day, the Crimson moved to the Murr tennis courts to take on Boston area foe Boston University (BU). Harvard completed its second sweep of the day, shutting out BU 6-0 to improve to 12-4 on the season.

Despite dropping a match at No. 1 doubles, the Crimson began the day by picking up a double point win Valdemar Pope and Walker and David Lins and Alan Yim.

Going into singles play, the Crimson dominated, winning all five of their completed matches in straight sets. Pape, Yim, Masato Perera, Marc Ktiriand David Lins all secured singles win terrier opponents. Perera, Ktiri and Lins all took their first wins in the 2023 spring season.

Harvard Highlights

• The Crimson was perfect that day, sweeping both opponents in a doubleheader to improve to 12-4 on the year.
• Jachuck and Sun continue to dominate as a singles duo. Today 1-1, the duo is now 11-3.
• Walker is the first Crimson player to reach double figures in singles wins heading into the spring. With his match win over 49th nationally ranked Ryan Fishback, Walker improved to 10-3.
• In the latest ITA singles rankings, Jachuck found himself in the top 125 for the first time since the fall. Backing his election to his new seat, Jachuck defeated his Virginia Tech opponent in straight sets.
• For the first time in his young college career, Pape played second for the Crimson. The first year won his match in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (5) and improved to 8-4.
• Yim was dominant in his first match at No. 3. Yim dropped the fewest games of any Crimson player, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-1.
• Perera, Ktiri and Lins all got their first wins in the spring of 2023. For freshmen Perera and Ktiri, this is their first collegiate win in a dual season.
• With the pair of wins, the Crimson remains perfect in its all-time streak with both teams. Harvard has won all 12 meetings with Virginia Tech and all 19 with BU.
