A big change is coming to the NFL’s much-maligned “Thursday Night Football,” and an even bigger change is potentially on the way.
NFL team owners voted to approve a change that allows teams to play two TNF games on short break in one season. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Previously, teams only had to play one such game during the season.
The measure was one of several rule changes franchise owners voted on Tuesday.
The club’s owners also presented a proposal that would have introduced a flexible schedule for the time slot. According to previous reports, such a system would allow Sunday afternoon games in weeks 14-17 to be moved to Thursday with 15 days’ notice.
Given how much players loathe the burden of playing games on four days’ rest, and how much fans (and announcer Al Michaels) have mocked and criticized Thursday games, which were sold to Amazon last season for a cool billion dollars a year, the bids are raised on how many times an elite team can play that day. was certainly controversial.
Take one such player who now looks likely to play the extra Thursday game many times over the rest of his career:
The flexible schedule appears to be controversial even among team owners, as evidenced by the fact that the proposal was not pushed through on Tuesday.
Opposite you is the influential owner of the New York Giants, John Mara, who called the idea “violent” to fans attending the games:
“People are used to going from Sunday afternoon to Sunday night, that doesn’t mean they like it. This year we can be flexed to Monday night, which I think is really disrespectful to our ticket holders. To flex the game back to Thursday night is just offensive to me. I’m against it sharply. Fortunately, it didn’t get enough votes today, but we’ll probably come back to it in May.”
On the other hand, you have the even more influential Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who praised the media potential of the idea to Yahoo Sports’ Jori Epstein:
As Mara noted, this issue is far from settled, but Jones and his allies now have just two months to find voters willing to switch sides.
