Mass Hockey mourns the loss of Bernard (Bernie) Michals

Massachusetts Hockey is deeply saddened to share the news that Bernard (Bernie) Michals, 85, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2023.

Bernie was involved for a long time in Massachusetts with youth hockey, making Massachusetts Hockey what it is today. He is one of the founders in the founding of the then Massachusetts Amateur Hockey Association and in the role of first vice president. He has left a lasting impression as a coach and hockey coach. One of his many accomplishments is leading the charge of implementing and certifying the use of masks at all levels of youth hockey. Michals was one of the leaders in organizing past USA Hockey national tournaments and camps. He was a founding member of Newton Youth Hockey, Middlesex Youth Hockey League, Bridgton Academy Youth Hockey, Boston Junior Braves and New England Junior Whalers. While leading the charge, he coached the University of Southern Maine and Bridgton Academy. His playing career included playing for the Schenectady Generals (1956-1957) and the Lake Placid Roamers (1958-1959).
