Cricket’s version of substitutes, two playing XIs to choose from and DRS calls for wides and no-balls in the new-look IPL.

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) returns for its 16th season, cricket fans can expect a few changes in the rules of the game.

Organizers of cricket’s most lucrative domestic tournament, which begins on Friday, have tweaked some of the rules regarding team composition and playing conditions.

From late team announcements to extensive reviews, here’s what the new look IPL brings to the game:

Impact player

In a tactical move borrowed from team sports such as basketball and football, teams in the IPL this year can replace the playing XI.

They have a choice of five substitutes, although all five must be Indians and substitutions can only be made before the start of an innings, at the end of an over or when the wicket falls.

Extensive and non-ball player reviews

In another first game of cricket, players can review fielding and off-ball decisions made by the umpires using the Decision Review System (DRS).

The use of DRS by players is currently limited to decisions regarding dismissals of batsmen. The maximum number of reviews given to each team is two, but captains can use them to judge wides and no-balls.

Play 11, which is named after the coin toss

Captains walking to the coin toss have two teams to choose from depending on which side the coin lands on and whether they bat first.

Currently, both captains exchange their team sheets before the coin toss and cannot make any changes. However, the IPL is supposed to allow both teams to declare their preferred playing XI based on whether they bat first and which combination suits them better.

Penalty for an unfair move by the wicketkeeper

To keep up with the growing variety of improvised shots from batsmen in the T20 format, wicketkeepers are known to change their position in anticipation even before the ball is delivered.

If they do that now in the IPL, the on-field umpire can penalize their team with a wide, a no-ball or a dead ball.

New dough always hits

In high-impact, batting T20s, batsmen who are in danger of being caught can choose which player to bat when they are dropped by moving to the non-striking end or staying inside their crease.

This move usually works in favor of batting teams as they are able to dictate who will face the next delivery. However, this is no longer the case, as regardless of where the outfielder is on the field, the incoming player always strikes.
