Cats Open WAC 5-2 with win vs. GCU

ABILENE Abilene Christian opened Western Athletic Conference tennis action with a 5-2 win over Grand Canyon on Friday.

“Anytime you start conference play it’s a different feeling and it was a big relief for us to start the way we did,” said ACU head coach Juan Nunez. “I like a lot of the things we did, overall. I think the energy and the way the guys approached this; they handled it the way I wanted. I was hoping we’d show the experience that we have, and I thought so. .”

The Wildcats won the singles point with wins Daniel Morozov and Mihaly Deli at No. 2 and Savan Chhabra and Ethan Scribner at address no. 3.

Deli won the sixth row of singles, Morozov put the Cats on the brink of victory and Dario Kmet sealed the win with a win at #1.

Cesar Barranquero also added a three-set win at No. 3 singles.

ACU arrives in Seattle at 11 a.m. Sunday to wrap up the first weekend of WAC action. The Redhawks beat New Mexico State 4-3 on Friday.
