Women’s Lacrosse Racks Up Weekly Awards

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Four student-athletes on the Maryland women’s lacrosse team earned both national and weekly recognition for their play during the Terps’ wins over No. 15 Michigan and No. 17 Princeton on Tuesday.

Emily Sterling he was named both the IWLCA Defensive Player of the Week and the Biggest Defensive Player of the Week. Abby Bosco named Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week and Unleashed National Player of the Week. Libby May was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Shaylan Ahearn was named Big Ten Midfielder of the Week.

Sterling was great in goal, with 27 saves and just 18 goals allowed, a .600 save percentage. The senior captain made 12 saves while holding No. 15 Michigan to just seven goals for a .632 save percentage. Well. 17 Against Princeton, Sterling had 15 saves, a season high, second-best of his career and best by a Big Ten goaltender in any game this year. In Maryland’s current seven-game winning streak, Sterling has made 71 saves. allowing just 52 goals, a .577 save percentage and leads the Big Ten with a .498 save percentage.

This is Sterling’s seventh Big Ten weekly honor of his career and second of the season. This is the fourth time he has been named IWLCA Defensive Player of the Week in his career, earning the honor three times last season.

Boscowa was phenomenal for the Terps in two wins, helping circle the draw circle with 13 draw controls on seven ground balls and six caused turnovers on the defensive end. The senior captain led Maryland in scoring in both games with seven against Michigan and six against Princeton. Bosco filled the stat sheet against Princeton with five ground balls and four caused runs to go along with his six strikeouts. The reigning Big Ten Defender of the Year helped hold Michigan’s leading scorer Jill Smith to just one goal on six shots, her season-worst.

This is Bosco’s first career National Player of the Week honor.

May was fantastic offensively in leading the Terps offense, scoring 11 goals in two games on just 15 shots. The senior was perfect to lead the Terps to a win over Michigan, scoring five goals on five shots. May led the offense against Princeton with a career-high six goals on 10 shots, scoring a hat trick in the first quarter alone. May, Maryland’s leading scorer, is now third in the Big Ten with 40 goals.

This is May’s third Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor and second of the season (February 28).

Ahearntallied6 points to lead Maryland to two top 20 wins. The senior captain had a career-high four points and a career-best three assists in the win against Michigan. He scored three goals in the second half, including the first of Maryland’s 5-0 run that ended the game, helping Maryland win. tied 15-9, including an 8-2 run in the first half to maintain sustained possession. Ahearn had two points (one goal, one assist) and two draws against Princeton. He now leads the Big Ten and ranks 10th in the nation with 87 draw controls.

This is Ahearn’s fourth Big Ten honor of the season and sixth of his career. He has now been named midfielder of the week four times in the last six weeks.
