Future Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is the richest Briton to own a sports team, but his wealth dwarfs that of some of his peers in Europe and the United States.

The billionaire INEOS chief, owner of French club OGC Nice, is among those publicly expressing interest in buying the English club. Ratcliffe, who has vowed to “return Manchester to Manchester United”, has joined the likes of Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani in the bidding war.
