Do you know the story of the man who was the world’s biggest bigamist? He married more than a hundred women between 1949 and 1981 without divorcing, earning himself the title of the most valuable marriage.

The Guinness World Records shared a video on Twitter telling the story John Vigliotto. It is said that Giovanni Vgliotto was not even his real name, but the one he used when married to his last wife.

He was 53 years old when he was caught. He claimed to have been born in Syracuse, Sicily, on April 3, 1929. He said his real name was Nikolai Peruskov, while the prosecution claimed his real identity was Fred Jipp, born April 3, 1936, in New York.

Vigliotto married 104 or 105 women between 1949 and 1981. None of his wives knew about each other and they hardly knew him. He is said to have married women in 27 different states and 14 other countries, each time using a fake identity. The con man met many of his potential wives at flea markets, and he usually proposed to them on their first date.

Weddings would then take place without delay, and after each one, Vgliotto would disappear with his new wife’s money and possessions, according to the GWR website.

He told the women that he lived far away and would ask them to pack all their things with him. After they packed, Vgliotto drove off with their possessions in a moving truck and was never seen again, it continued. He sold the stolen goods at flea markets, where he looked for possible new victims at the same time.

Despite many reports to the authorities, he managed to get away. However, his penultimate victim, Sharon Clark, a flea market manager from Indiana, tracked him down to Florida, where authorities arrested him on December 28, 1981.

His trial began in January 1983. He was sentenced to a total of 34 years in prison; 28 counts of fraud and six counts of bigamy and a fine of $336,000. He spent the remaining eight years of his life in the Arizona State Penitentiary and died in 1991 at age 61 of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Until his death, he insisted his only crime was being a hopeless romantic with a weakness for women, the GWR website said.
