HOBOKEN, NJ (April 7, 2023) Second year student Isabella the woman won a pair as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s tennis team defeated Misericordia University 7-2 Friday in a MAC Freedom match at the Stevens Tennis Courts.
For the second consecutive match, junior Polina Odintseva collected a three-set singles win for the Ducks, who won their fifth straight match to improve to 5-5 and a perfect 4-0 in the MAC Freedom. The convincing win was the Ducks’ 10th in a row in regular season conference play.
Two-time defending MAC Freedom Player of the Year Brianna Pizzano scored twice to lead Misericordia, which fell to 7-6 on the year and 1-1 in conference action. The Ducks’ win snapped the Cougars’ two-game winning streak.
As they have done throughout their current winning streak, the Ducks got off to a fast start, winning two of three doubleheaders. Dona collaborated with the senior Julia Marchisio picks up its third straight win, going 8-3 with Cassie Benderavich and Lauren Visall’s three-point line, while the first-year team Stephanie Untermeyer and Anya Sharma won her fifth straight with an 8-4 win over Lydia Barbour and Erin Cridge. Pizzano teamed with Emily Breck for an 8-2 win at first doubles as the Ducks took a 2-1 advantage into singles.
When the game moved to singles, Pizzano collected the singles win, defeating Untermeyer in the first row in a competitive 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 match. Meanwhile, the Ducks won the remaining five singles flights to produce the final margin of victory. Four of the five wins came in straight sets, with Malinowski winning cleanly 6-2, 6-0 at line two, sophomore Emma Equia beating Cridge at line four 6-0, 6-1 with Dona and the first year. Fiona Flores earning wins on five and six lines.
After dropping the first set 6-3, Odintseva won the final two sets, 6-2 and 6-4 to defeat Barbour and record her second win of the season.
Next: Women’s Tennis continues MAC Freedom play on April 12 with a cross country match against FDU-Florham. The Ducks have won seven of eight all-time meetings with the Devils, four of which have come via shutouts.
