ATHENS Kirby Smarts’ takeaways from the second fight were not fresh. Mainly because the Bulldogs ended up scrambling on Thursday to try and get ahead of the severe weather accurately predicted for Saturday.
If Georgia had waited until Saturday to practice, Smart believes the group would not have been able to complete the scrimmage.
They have to play. That’s what we tried to do in our practices to make sure we play enough. Playing is the third, Smart said. There is no greater pressure on the quarterback than on third down. Third down, that’s where you make the difference. We tried to put those guys in that situation so we could make them better.
To highlight the pressure on the quarterbacks, Smart noted that Georgia didn’t run the ball as much on the second kickoff. Part of that could be a lack of running back depth right now, with Branson Robinson and Roderick Robinson being Georgia’s lone healthy running backs. However, Georgia also wants to get as long a look as possible when selecting its next quarterback.
Smart also complained about the novelty in the wide receiver position. With five new players in spring transfers Dominic Lovett and Rara Thomas, as well as freshman enrollees Tyler Williams, Antonhy Evans and Zeed Haynes, there are growing pains with the group.
It certainly doesn’t help anyone who ends up in charge of Stetson Bennett.
“Five people are basically trying to learn a new language, and it’s a new language because they didn’t speak that language before they came here,” Smart said. So there’s a bit of frustration.
Georgia moves into the final week of spring practice as it returns to the practice field on Tuesday. G-Day begins on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. The event takes place at Sanford Stadium.
