It was a case of a new era but the same story for Chelsea on Saturday as Wolves beat them 1-0 at Molineux on Saturday to stay 11th in the Premier League table.
If Frank Lampard’s second stint as Chelsea manager was designed to provide a turnaround for their under-fire players, then Todd Boehly’s gamble got off to a bad start on Saturday.
The Blues were unenthusiastic as they lost 1-0 to Wolves thanks to Matheus Nunes’ 31st minute goal. It left the visitors in 11th place in the table and all hopes of European football next season extinguished.
Having been sacked by Everton earlier in the campaign, Lampard has little time to assess the situation. On Wednesday, he faces Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the first leg of the Champions League – a contest that represents their last chance to salvage a miserable season.

Sky no longer the limit for Chelsea and others?
Sky Sports’ influence on the Premier League has been huge – and with five titles this century, it’s fair to say the Blues have been integral to their coverage. However, the Premier League is discussing dropping several of its partners, such as Sky Sports and BT Sport, and showing games on its own platform in the future.
