Athletics Valerie Clark was named America’s First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week

LOGAN, Utah Utah State Athletics Sophomore Valerie Clark has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the season ending Sunday, April 9. The award is voted on by a statewide media panel.

The Mona, Utah native won the javelin at the Utah Spring Classic with 48.56 meters (159-4). Clark now ranks second all-time in USU’s javelin. This season, Clark is now ranked fifth in the Mountain West and 38th nationally in the javelin.

Clark has been named America First Credit Union USU Student Athlete of the Week for the first time.

Utah State track and field collected five individual titles and 20 top-3 finishes to go along with last weekend’s Utah Spring Classic. In addition to Junior Clark Djamillah Paepke-Chile finished second in the javelin at 48.11 meters (157-10, third all-time in the javelin at USU. Junior Mattie Geddes also ventured onto USU’s all-time list in the women’s 800 meters, finishing second in the event in 2:10.32, moving to eighth all-time at USU.

Senior Hannah Davidson won the women’s 1500 meters in 4:32:89. Senior Tori Bailey won the women’s discus throw with 50.73 meters (166-5) and finished third in the hammer with 54.58 meters (179-1. On the men’s side, the junior Brennan Benson won the 800m in 1:50.64 as a freshman Spencer Price won the first point of the triple jump with 13.92 meters (45-8.00).

Utah State track and field returns to action this week at the California Quartet meets. The Aggies will compete against Mt. In SAC Relays competitions from Wednesday to Saturday 12.-15. April and at the Azusa Pacific Invite event from Thursday to Saturday 13-15 April. USU will also be represented at both the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate and the Beach Invitational in Long Beach Thursday through Saturday the 13th-15th. April.

USU Week’s student-athlete candidates from other sports:
GOLF Sophomore Esteban Jaramillo (Bogotá, Colombia) was the top seed in the state of Utah last week at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic held at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Arizona. Jaramillo was 38th at 5-221 (73-71-77) as Utah State finished 19th. The Aggies shot an 18-over 306 over the final 18 holes on the par-72, 7,334-yard Cattail Course.

SOFTBALL Graduated freshman Gabriella Jimenez (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Aggies both offensively and defensively last week as Utah State went 1-2 in the Mountain West at home against San Diego State (0-13, 5-4, 3-6). Overall, Jimenez hit .375 (3-for-8), including one home run, while accounting for a team-best four RBIs and a team-high-tying six total bases. He had a .750 slugging percentage and drew one walk. Jimenez also had a team-best 18 takedowns, recording six in each game, and was perfect in the field. In the second game, Jimenez was 2-for-3, including a home run and three RBIs. In the third game, Jimenez was 1-2 at the plate, drawing one walk and recording an RBI.

MEN’S TENNIS Senior David Cierny (Zvolen, Slovakia) posted a combined 3-0 record last week as he helped Utah State to a 2-0 Mountain West record last week with home wins over Air Force (4-1) and San Diego State (4-). 1). Against the Falcons, Cierny won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-4), while his singles match with No. 2 Bodin Zarkovic was tied. And against the Aztecs, Cierny won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-2), while he and Zarkovic won 7-6 (4) for the first doubles spot.

WOMEN’S TENNIS Junior Lisa Küng (Stein am Rhein, Switzerland) posted a combined 4-0 record last week as Utah State dropped a pair of Mountain West games to New Mexico (4-1) and Air Force (4-2) at United States Air. Force Military Academy in Colorado. Against the Lobos, Küng won in straight sets at No. 2 singles (6-4, 7-5) and with teammate Monique Burton won 6-1 at first doubles. And against the Falcons, Küng won in straight sets at No. 2 singles (6-0, 7-5) and won 6-2 at first doubles.

MEN’S ACCOMMODATION Senior Brennan Benson (Orem, Utah) won the 800 meters at the Utah Spring Classic in 1:50.64. Benson’s time is first among Mountain West runners this season.
