According to the Golf Channel storytheir first interaction was “painfully awkward” as Rahm’s English was still quite broken.

“I went to my assistant [Michael Beard] and said, “I don’t think this kid’s going to make it,” Mickelson said later. “I thought he might be a kid who fails after a semester or a year.”

Rahm credits his love of rap music, especially Kendrick Lamar and Eminem, with helping him improve his English.

In 2020, Rahm showcased his rapping skills during a guest appearance on the SubPar podcast through Lamar’s “King Kunta”.

Rahm has said Phelps is a friend he turns to for advice.

“You know, he’s a great guy,” Rahm said of Phelps, according to Golf Digest. “He’s been through a lot, and as an athlete he’s someone to look up to. When you’re the greatest Olympian of all time, you’ve got a couple of tricks up your sleeve, a couple of good bits of wisdom at that. .”

When Rahm’s first child was born just days before the championships, Rahm asked Phelps for advice on how to handle the situation.

Per Golf Digest:

“You know, he’s been very open to my questions. Anytime I’ve had a question about anything, he’s answered,” Rahm said. “What I can talk about or am willing to talk about was mainly when [son] Kepa was born he texted me right away because he was in Colorado when his first child was born and he flew back for the birth and then two days later he had to go back to continue training for the Olympics.

“He knows how hard it is to be there and then right after that, away, I have to go practice and I don’t see him. He helped me through that. It’s not an easy feeling. It wasn’t the easiest thing to do, even if it was the Masters . I really didn’t want to leave the room, but he helped me do it.”

Now the Masters champion, Rahm needs wins at the PGA Championship and the Open Championship to win the career grand slam.

If he does, he would be only the sixth man in history to accomplish the feat.

Only five men, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Gene Sarazen, have won professional golf’s modern Grand Slam.

With Rahm now having two majors at the young age of 28, he could aim for a sixth.
