Women’s tennis battles, score 4-3 to PC in season finale

FARMVILLE, Va. Longwood women’s tennis hosts Presbyterian Blue Hosea today in the final dual match of the season. The Lancers fought hard until the end, but eventually fell 4-3 in a heated affair.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN:

Longwood (7-15) had to drop the opening doubles point on the brink as Presbyterian (6-15) led the Lancers on all three doubles courts. Longwood was undaunted, however, and the Lancers found ways to win at No. 1 and with a seventh at No. 3 to claim the first point.

Singles also offered tight and entertaining matches. Emma Nurgazieva took the victory at number one in dramatic fashion, winning the third set with a tie on the seventh point. Maria Saez came close to No. 2 and Karina Rizvanova took care of things in the top of the 3rd to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead.

Although Victoria Czerny battled into the third set at No. 4, she eventually dropped her singles match. Losses at No. 5 and No. 6 earned the Blue Hose a win, but the fight and passion the Lancers showed today was evident.

“The ladies gave everything they had on the court today,” said Longwood Director of Tennis Adam Jackson. “Presbyterian just came out on top, credit to them for fighting hard as well. We had some come-from-behind wins and won a doubles point when we were down on all three courts. They played with a lot of heart and I’m proud.”
