Fouad Messaoudi leads NCAA by breaking school record in 1,500 meters at Bryan Clay Invitational

WATER WITHOUT POWER Oklahoma State distance runner Fouad Messaoudi took the NCAA lead and broke the school record in the 1,500 meters Saturday night, highlighting the final day of OSU’s quad-meet weekend across the country.

Messaoudi returned to the track for the first time since taking home a pair of NCAA titles in impressive fashion, going toe-to-toe with NCAA legend Cooper Teare and a field that included several national champions and collegiate record holders. He sat behind Teare for most of the race before trading leads with Teare all the way to the line, where he eventually finished second overall in 3:35.16.

At the same time, Messaoud became the fourth-fastest NCAA 1,500-meter runner of all time and will move to fourth in the world in the event this year. He also broke the previous school record by more than two seconds in just his first outdoor season race, defeating three high-level pros in the process, and was the best college finisher in the field.

On the women’s side, Gabija Galvydyte returned to the second race of the weekend in the 1500 meters after competing in the 800 meters on Friday night. Galvydyte opened with a nearly five-second personal best in the 1,500 with a time of 4:14.76, giving him a pair of high-level marks in Friday’s 2:03.21 800m.

Meanwhile, at the Tom Jones Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., Mehdi Yanouri made OSU history by breaking Paul Larkins’ 37-year-old outdoor record in the 800m. Yanouri crossed the finish line in a scorching 1:46.96 to beat Larkins’ long-standing record. In her decision, Yanouri bested her previous best time by nearly two seconds just two weeks ago at the Texas Relays.

DJ McArthur also had an impressive showcase in the 400m, winning in an outdoor personal best of 46.05. McArthur’s performance is also the fifth fastest in OSU history.

The Cowgirl 4×400 Meter team ran the fastest time of their outdoor season in the final event of the day. Ansley Scott, Tamara Woodley, Tori Ortiz and Yasmine Johnson posted a time of 3:36.29, a nearly second improvement over the team’s performance at the Jim Click Invitational last weekend. Their scoring is the sixth fastest in OSU history.

at the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla., Crayton Shaw was an impressive showcase in the second half of the men’s Decathlon, leading to his first podium finish as a Cowboy. Shaw, after starting the day ranked fourth, jumped to second after posting top-three finishes in every event on day two, including two first-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles and pole vault. His 6,417 points is a career best and moves him into the top five on OSU’s scoring list in just his first career Decathlon in the orange and black.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls next look toward another multi-meet weekend at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. and the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla.
