DUBUQUE, Iowa The University of Dubuque announced Friday, April 14, plans to add Division III men’s and women’s hockey for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
The teams compete in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). Other schools in the conference include Adrian, Aurora, Concordia Wisconsin, Lake Forest, Lawrence, Marian, Milwaukee School of Engineering, St. Norbert and Trine.
Finlandia was also part of the conference, but they
recently announced the closure of its entire university
this spring, so they no longer participate. Dubuque plans to bring on board many Finlandia players who currently do not have a team for the 2023-24 season.
“We are excited to combine Finlandia University’s hockey history, the Dubuque community’s passion for hockey, and the fresh thinking of adding a competitive NCAA program,” said Nelson Edmonds, vice president for student engagement and intercollegiate athletics. press release. “We look forward to our future students from Finlandia when they become our newest Spartans.”
Dubuque, located in eastern Iowa on the border of both Wisconsin and Illinois, is partnering with the Dubuque Ice Arena to become the home arena. The USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints also operate in that arena.
“In 2008, hockey was briefly a club sport at UD, and we have always wanted to provide that collegiate experience for our students, parents and all of our UD constituents and the Dubuque community,” Edmonds added. “We are excited about the partnerships and relationships that have been developed to provide this opportunity for our student-athletes.”
