Morton, Hanson hit new career bests at Bryan Clay Invitational

AZUSA, California UNI track and field wrapped up an active four-meet weekend late Saturday night as the Panthers Carter Morton and Drake Hanson competed in the Bryan Clay Invitational on the campus of Azusa Pacific University.

Morton, the Most Valuable Athlete at February’s Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Indoor Championships, competed in his first decathlon of the outdoor season on Thursday at Cougar Athletic Stadium. The Panther junior recorded career bests in three of the decathlon’s 10 events, including 11.05 seconds in the 100 meters, 33.67 meters in the discus and 53.28 meters in the javelin. Morton also topped Group A in the high jump with a jump of 2.01 meters. Sixth in Group A, Morton finished the multi-event competition with a career-best 7,210 points, surpassing his previous high by 238 points and surpassing 7,000 points for the first time in his career.

On the track, Hanson represented the purple and gold at two distances on Friday and Saturday, starting with Friday’s 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.20 and a 52nd-place finish. Hanson followed up his Friday race late Saturday night in the 1,500 meters, clocking a career-best 3:53.24 to finish 132nd in the 190-man field.
