Erik ten Hag could be in for another busy summer in the transfer market with his Manchester United squad in need of reinforcements ahead of his second season
Manchester United’s hopes of a Cup treble ended on Thursday, but manager Erik ten Hag has no time to rest on his laurels.
United beat Sevilla 3-0 to drop out of the Europa League, losing 5-2 on aggregate to Jose Luis Mendilibar’s side. Individual mistakes played their part, with Harry Maguire and David de Gea to blame after two late own goals in the first leg had given the Spaniard hope.
However, Ten Hag’s men will have the No.1 back straight away in the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton on Sunday. Strong performances at Wembley could allow some players to stake their claim for a place in next season’s squad, and Mirror football features the latest stories from Old Trafford ahead of a busy summer.
Ten Hag to ax 12
Erik ten Hag could offload up to 12 Manchester United players as the manager prepares for a summer overhaul. Harry Maguire and David de Gea are the leading stars in the line of fire after mistakes against Sevilla, but they are not the only ones.
The United manager made a number of summer signings in his first season, but many of those he inherited may be unnecessary. Others touted for an exit include Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay and Fred.

The Red Devils are expected to add to their squad in the summer, with a new striker a top priority. However, they may streamline the squad first, with several fringe players leaving as loanees such as Wout Weghorst return to their parent clubs.

Hannibal proves Neville right
Man Utd midfielder Hannibal was allowed to go out on loan this season, but the youngster has impressed those watching from afar. The Tunisian has spent the campaign at Birmingham City, playing regularly for the Blues, and his performances there have earned him more fans in Birmingham and Manchester.
His displays have brought to mind Gary Neville’s comments last season. Neville praised the youngster after a passionate if aggressive challenge on Liverpool’s Naby Keita, although he admitted the comments could have strayed into unprofessionalism.
“You need a young kid to come and show others how to sprint the ball and challenge,” Neville said during United’s 4-0 defeat at Liverpool last season. “I’m really proud of him! Maybe he doesn’t like the idea of Liverpool players passing it around him. I hope others are the same way.”

Fallout from De Gea’s argument
Erik ten Hag quickly had to eat his words because of David de Gea. The goalkeeper was at fault for Sevilla’s third goal on Thursday as he failed to handle a long ball, prompting some to return to the United manager’s earlier comments about the “multitasking” Spaniard.
“Stopping goals, avoiding goals because that’s the main job of goalkeepers,” Ten Hag said earlier this week. “You can do it in many different ways, everyone has their own particular style and nowadays possession is becoming more and more important, especially at the top level, because that’s where you dominate and it’s harder for the opposition to get pressure. You also give away less chances.
“But at the end of the day it’s about stopping goals, stopping shots, stopping crosses, one-on-ones etc. This is more than a classic goalkeeper. I think David is really versatile and a really complete goalkeeper. We’re very happy with him.”
