Smith throws a No-Hitter for the Pirates perfectly over Providence

Providence, RI Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) rolled 21^St no-hitter is history for Seton Hall as the Pirates swept their fourth straight BIG EAST series. The Pirates won game one, 11-1, before beating the Friars 9-3 in game two.

How did it happen

• Despite the hit, the Friars still managed to push one run across. That run came in the first inning when Providence took an early lead.
• The Pirates regained the lead in the third inning. Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) tied things up with an RBI double followed by a Taylor Hill (Little Falls, NJ) a two-run home run gave Seton Hall a 3-1 lead.
• The Pirates scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to salt the game away. In the fifth, Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, NY) broke the game open with a three-run homer to make it 6-1. Smith then followed that up with a home run of his own as the pair went back-to-back to make it 7-1.
• After the Pirates tacked on four extra runs in the sixth, Smith took the circle three outs away from the no-hitter. The senior cruised through the inning, landing the side to end the game.

• Smith’s no-hitter is 21^St in program history and the first since Ashley Forsyth’s complete game on April 8, 2010.

• Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, NJ) started the scoring in the second with a home run.
• In the third, Carr kept his hot streak at the plate with an RBI single to make it a 2-0 Pirates lead.
• After sacrifice flies in the fourth made it a 3-1 game, the Pirates erupted in a six-run fifth. When Alexander hit a pitch to score a run, Andrea Perez (Corona, CA) and Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.)hit back-to-back two-run doubles to make it 8-1. Carr ended the inning with a bases-loaded walk to make it a 9-1 game.
• Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.) was strong in the circle again, allowing just three runs over seven innings and striking out four.

• The win gives the Pirates their fourth consecutive BIG EAST series and 12th^th outright conference win.
• Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) extended her winning streak to 16 matches, matching Yasmin Harrell’s program record.
