Pepperdine sweeps through opening day of WCC Championships

SANTA MONICA, California #19 Pepperdine’s beach volleyball team had a successful opening day of the West Coast Conference Championships, beating both #7 Pacific and #3 Saint Mary’s.

Gracey Campbell and Juju Quintero ranked 4th and Savannah Standage and Gabriella Perez at No. 3 each won their matches in straight sets and won both duals. Waves No. 1, 3 and 5 pairings went 4-0 in the series all day.

MATCH SYSTEMS

In the first dual Kristine Briede and Madison Oriskovich made quick work of their opponents on court five and won 21-7, 21-4 to put the Waves on the board. McKenna Thomas and Kate Clermont then won the first court 21-8, 21-10 and put the team through.

Gracey Campbell and Juju Quintero would do the honors with a 21-11, 21-15 win at No. 4, even if all matches were played out in the opening rounds of the tournament. Savannah Standage and Gabriella Perez won an amazing 21-2 in his first set at No. 3 and made it 4-0 with a 21-17 win in the second set. Alexus McLeod and Aubrey Roberts completed the sweep with an 18-21, 21-17, 15-11 win at No. 2.

In the final dual of the day, McLeod and Roberts closed the deal early, winning the No. 2 game 21-8, 21-14 to put the Waves on the board. Briede and Oriskovich then outscored their opponents 21-14, 21-8 to put the team in a closing position.

Standage and Perez on court three would do the honors with a 21-14, 21-15 victory. Clermont and Thomas then won a pair of 21-16 sets on the first court to make it 4-0, and Campbell and Quintero completed the sweep on the final set, 22-24, 21-17, 15-11.

NEXT

Tomorrow, the Waves open the day against PCH Cup rival LMU at 10:30 a.m. The winner advances to the championship doubles tournament at 1:30 p.m., while the loser drops into the elimination bracket to play at noon.
